My dear, I don't give a damn.

Context

Gone With the Wind: a classic novel turned into an even classic-er film.

Rhett tells his wife Scarlett that he's leaving her, and, when she asks him, "what shall I do?" he eventually tells her "I don't give a damn."

Real nice guy, that Rhett.

Rhett explains that he's old and that he longs for the past when things were slower and simpler; he plans to move away from the hustle and bustle of Scarlett with her crazy, capitalist life and her (until recently) unrequited love.

Where you've heard it

We know what you're thinking: "You forgot the 'frankly'!"

Nopers.

The original line exists sans "frankly"—that part was added for the movie.

As it turns out, it's actually quite an apt addition because the movie omits Rhett's longwinded explanation about how he'd rather remember something as whole than see it in a poorly mended state. Sounds to us like ol' Margaret could've learned a thing or two about brevity from Hollywood.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This is one of the most famous movie quotes of all time; everyone has heard it, even if they don't know where it comes from.

Oh, what's that? You quoted it without the "frankly" in a haughty display of the sheer will power it takes to slug through a thousand-page marathon novel from the 30s?

8 it is.
