Speaker: Indiana Jones

"Snakes...why'd it have to be snakes?"

Snakes…why'd it have to be snakes?

Context

This line is spoken by Indiana Jones in the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).

Let's face it: Indiana Jones is basically Superman. He hunts Nazis; he carries a whip; and, boy, can he sport a wool fedora.

There's just one thing he's afraid of: snakes. And as luck (read: Hollywood genius) would have it, when he throws his torch down into the Well of the Souls, he finds that the floor is moving because it's covered in more snakes than even Samuel L. Jackson could handle.

And in case Indy wasn't afraid enough, Sallah follows up with, "Asps…very dangerous."

Thanks, Sallah. We got it.

Where you've heard it

According to statistics, when someone born before 1985 sees a snake, there's a 97% chance they'll say this line.

Aside from that, it's mostly used in reference to tough guys being afraid of something. Like, if you saw Arnold Schwarzenegger running away from a Chihuahua, you might say "Chihuahuas…why'd it have to be Chihuahuas?" (P.S. Pics or it didn't happen.)

The quote is so famous it even became its own trope.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Quoting Indiana Jones never even borders on pretentious.
