Speaker: Dorothy Gale

"Somewhere over the rainbow."

Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.

Context

This line is from the song "Over the Rainbow," sung by Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) in the movie The Wizard of Oz (1939).

Five minutes into this classic movie, our heroine Dorothy sings this song to cheer herself up after her neighbor Miss Gulch threatens to kill her little dog, Toto. She's basically imagining the ideal place to live, someplace where nasty neighbors won't murder innocent dogs. What? You never sing yourself into a better mood?

Where you've heard it

Everywhere. Even if you're one of those rare people who's never seen The Wizard of Oz, we bet you've heard this song at least a thousand times.

As if it wasn't already popular enough, this song made a resurgence after Hawaiian musician Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole recorded a beautiful ukulele version in 1993. Since then, this version has cropped up in everything from Scrubs to Cold Case to holiday albums.

Seems like this song brings out the best in vocalists, too. Katharine McPhee sang it in the finals of American Idol in 2006. And Pink sang it at the Academy Awards in 2014 in an uncharacteristically (for a punk rocker like Pink) sweet performance. Watch it and see if you don't get chills.

As if this wasn't enough, you can catch this song in movies like Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. It's no wonder the Recording Industry Association of America ranked this song number one on their Songs of the Century list. Seriously!

Here's a fun fact, though: This song almost wasn't in the movie at all. MGM chief execs deleted the song from early versions of the film, thinking it slowed down the pace. A persistent associate director and Garland's vocal coach campaigned to get it back in. Can you imagine the movie without it? Come to think of it, can you imagine the world without it?

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Impossible to be pretentious. Because have you seen Judy Garland? Try stealing this guy's idea to liven up a morning commute and see who doesn't walk away smiling.
