Source: Romans 12:19

Author: Paul of Tarsus

"Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord."

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

Context

This line is written by Paul in Romans 12:19.

Paul's writing to the Romans about how to be good Christians (doesn't that guy every talk about anything else?) and it turns out revenge is a no-no. Just leave all your revenge plans for God, and he'll take care of it for you.

Where you've heard it

This one might come up when someone's trying to convince an angry, vengeful samurai from bringing the full weight of justice down upon the heads of the evil ninja clan that murdered his family. (Just one example, obviously.)

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Any quote with "saith the Lord" in it has to be at least a little pretentious, saith us.
