Speaker: Jesus

"What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."

Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Context

Here we have Jesus responding to a question from the Pharisees, who are trying to ask him really thorny religious questions to make him look bad. In this case, they ask him about the lawfulness of divorce in Jewish law. He answers using this line, which the Pharisees later challenge.

Where you've heard it

This line is traditionally recited at Christian wedding ceremonies, usually by the officiating minister. Sometimes it's given a modern twist, such as "What God and Tinder hath joined together, let no man put asunder."

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

If there's a place for pretentiousness (and cake!), it's probably a wedding, right?
