A Lesson Before Dying Chapter 27 Summary

  • After church one day the Reverend asks to talk to Grant. Jefferson has less than three weeks to live, and he's worried because he isn't saved yet (in the Christian sense).
  • They argue over whether or not Grant should teach Jefferson anything about his soul. He says he's just responsible for the three R's (reading, writing and 'rithmetic), but the preacher insists that he's got more work to do than just that.
  • Grant says he won't stop Jefferson from believing, but that he won't lie to him either. The Reverend tells Grant that he has to lie all the time to comfort people.
