A Man for All Seasons Questions

Bring on the tough stuff. There’s not just one right answer.

  1. What would you have done had you been in Sir Thomas More's position?
  2. Is King Henry VIII depicted as being a bad king? Does his position seem understandable to you or not?
  3. Who is the main villain in the play? Is Rich worse than Cromwell? Why or why not?
  4. Were Cromwell and Wolsey as bad as the movie depicts them? Consider that they were trying to prevent the civil war that would surely erupt if the king weren't able to produce a male heir (but also consider their devious methods).
  5. Thomas More won't take the oath even though it would help his family and allow him to remain with them. Do you think it's okay to break with your principles for the sake of your own family—or does More's position have more integrity?
  6. Why does Richard Rich want More to employ him instead of Cromwell at the beginning? Did he originally have some kind of conscience?
  7. What does More mean when he says to Norfolk, "Affection goes as deep in me as you, I think. But only God is love right through, Howard, and that's my self"?
