Airborn Chapter 10 Summary

Shipshape

  • Matt was hoping he and Kate could just sneak back onto the Aurora, but Miss Simpkins blew their cover by screaming shrilly at Mr. Lisbon and the captain. Of course.
  • Kate defends Matt pretty well by insisting that his absence was all her fault, but his lateness to work didn't go unnoticed by the captain.
  • The good news is that there's enough hydrium for the ship to lift off—they'll need to lighten their cargo load by a significant amount, but at least they're not marooned.
  • The largest and heaviest crates they have to off-load are filled with rubber hosing. Okay.
  • One of the more obnoxious guests is anxiously monitoring what the crew is doing with his antiques that are being off-loaded. When the captain catches him giving guff to Matt he defends him by delivering a scathing remark.
  • That evening the captain guides the crew through seeing if the Aurora will indeed lift-off. As they slowly loosen the lines holding her to the beach, she ascends about seven feet into the air, where they tie her off once more.
  • Matt starts happy-crying and Baz teases him for being all emotional.
  • There is one day's work left to repair the tail fin and rudder that were damaged in their landing, but for the evening the crew are given shore leave.
  • Back on board, everyone is in good spirits during dinner.
  • Vlad the chef is super-duper excited about the fish that they caught and prepared for supper. He's never seen fish so beautiful, and he insists that he could stay on that island forever and charge exorbitant amounts of money in a fancy-schmancy restaurant.
  • Kate is sitting alone at dinner—Miss Simpkins has been laid up with yet another headache, so she's snoozing in their cabin.
  • Kate has found a picture of that evil little jumping snake in a nature book. It turns out that it wasn't poisonous at all, but just wanted to make friends. Aw…
  • Kate waits around after dinner so she can catch Matt alone.
  • Matt doesn't think it's a great idea to go back into the forest, especially since the captain pretty much expressly forbade him going on any more adventures.
  • Kate threatens to invite Bruce Lunardi if Matt won't come with her into the woods. Yup—that works, playing dudes off of each other.
  • Matt finally gives in, and agrees to meet at first light for their expedition, as long as he makes it back to the ship in time for his noon shift.
  • That night Matt has a hard time sleeping again because the Aurora is on the ground; his claustrophobia is kicking in.
