Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret is like a bum tooth: It makes people uncomfortable and edgy and there are lots of folks who just want to pull the thing out. There are certainly many schools, libraries, and communities that haven't liked it over the years, and plenty have even banned it, so consider yourself warned. With Playboy, boobs, periods, puberty, and religion on the table, there's plenty in this book to sound alarms.

However, while some books are controversial in pretty extreme ways, Margaret's controversial content is relatable to pretty much everyone, like cat memes and candy. After all, every girl faces puberty at some point, and every guy secretly wants to know all about girls. Therefore, as much as some of the content might make your students uncomfortable, this same content is also their in to the book—it's stuff on every young person's mind.
