Character Analysis
This unnamed man is one of the many people complicit in the Tunnel Disaster. We get a very interesting backstory for him that helps explain his role in all of this. The trainmaster's younger brother, an intelligent young researcher, committed suicide after the awful Directive passed. The trainmaster is now horribly disillusioned. A true victim of the looters' regime, he becomes an agent of that regime in his grief and helps contribute to a disaster that claims a lot of lives.
