Nick Fury

Fury plays the chessmaster here, moving his pieces into position until he can set them loose on Loki and save the world. He's not strictly a hero because he's insanely sneaky, and it's clear that none of the other heroes quite trusts him (even the Black Widow, who works for him, shoots him suspicious glances every now and again).

Nick's a big-picture guy, and he needs the heroes to come together in just the right way if Team Earth isn't going to end up polishing alien boots for the rest of eternity.

To do that, he does what all good guides and mentors do: shows the heroes who they can become, and helps nudge them in the right direction. Check out his big throwdown speech when the gang is at its low point:

NICK FURY: There was an idea, Stark knows this, called the Avengers Initiative. The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if they could become something more. To see if they could work together when we needed them to, to fight the battles that we never could. Phil Coulson died, still believing in that idea. In heroes.
