Ahhh. Now we can see where Marty's defeatist attitude comes from. He's watched his "old man" give in and give up for years. It's all he knows. So when the going gets tough, he knows that the tough… pack it in.

Marty acts like the words don't hurt him, but based on everything else we know about him, we have a hard time believing they don't affect him on some level. He wants to be smart, and popular and recognized for his talent…he sometimes just doesn't want to work for all of it. Because…working is hard. Ain't nobody got time for that.
