The Book of Judges is set during the time between the prophets (Abraham, Moses, etc.) and the kings (Saul, David, Solomon, etc.). The function of judges differs from that of prophets or kings in that judges were specifically military leaders sent to deliver Israel by the sword, as opposed to by miracles or by political means.
