Childhood's End Chapter 11 Summary

  • Jan leans against an elephant. Unfortunately for the elephant, it's already been to the taxidermist.
  • Rupert is listing the small menagerie he has already sent to the Overlords' home world. He offhandedly mentions that a man named Sullivan had the job of providing a sperm whale and a giant squid for the Overlords' collection.
  • Jan wonders how they'll manage to pick up that package, and Rupert says a ship will just come down and pick it up. Bingo…
  • A deep-sea submersible takes Jan under the sea lab S.2 to visit Sullivan. Jan finds it remarkable that the sea, right next to humanity for centuries, is just about as well explored as space.
  • At the sea lab, Jan asks Sullivan what he would think if the Overlords told him he couldn't go into the ocean to study it.
  • Sullivan answers he'd be pointedly annoyed, then smiles—he wonders how exactly he can help Jan.
