    Jeanne DuPrau's inspiration for this book came straight from the Cold War scare during the 1950s. People were actually making makeshift bomb shelters below their homes, which caused DuPrau to think, "Hmmm…I should turn this into a very popular young adult novel about living in the dark because of threat of war." Good call, Jeanne. Read all about the Cold War and the causes of this paranoid time in our nation's history.

  2. The Cuban Missile Crisis: More Cold War Fun
    Moving forward in our look at the Cold War to the 1960s, we think it's important to think about what was going on in Cuba. The Cuban Missile Crisis was a big freakin' deal, and many believed this event to be "it" (as in the end of civilization).
