The Crystal Cave Book One, Chapter 11 Summary

  • Merlin returns to the palace and finds that he's locked out. He sneaks back to his old room, which is in darkness.
  • Merlin finds Cerdic's body thrown onto his bed. Outside, he overhears some of the king's men looking for him.
  • Merlin grabs a few things he thinks he can use on the road, because he's 100% sure that he has to run. He takes Cerdic's dagger, since Cerdic won't be needing it anymore.
  • As Merlin gets close to Cerdic's body with the lamp, he can see that his friend's throat has been cut. Maybe Camlach's story about his own bloody dagger and the deer wasn't true, eh?
  • There's no time for Merlin to honor his friend properly, but he knows a thing or two about Saxon funeral rites. So he drops the oil lamp right on top Cerdic and sets him on fire.
  • Merlin also sets that wing of the palace on fire, and then he escapes over the orchard wall to meet his pony.
  • But Merlin's having a bad day. Two very shady guys appear from the darkness and grab him.
  • It turns out that these two fellas want to kidnap Merlin and take him to their master far, far away. What could be better for an illegitimate prince on the run? Merlin decides to go with the flow.
  • And flow it is, as they all make their escape in a little coracle on a river.
