Interview with Daedalus

Interview with Daedalus

Shmoop investigators have recently discovered a treasure trove of data on Daedalus in the form of scientific logs. These documents detail some of his recent projects and also reveal some possible crimes.

The Daeda-Logs

Location: Elysium Laboratory
Project: Otto, the Automaton

Achievements:

New automaton making amazing strides. Very strong. Can bend steel. Smashed a block of marble with fist. Impervious to fire.

Obstacles:
Still a mindless creation. Newest positronic brain model seems to be a failure. Automaton has yet to gain consciousness. Is artificial life truly possible?

Notes:
Perdix is working on a model of his own—sure to fail. Boy appears to have forgiven me for killing him. Interesting.

Location: Elysium Laboratory
Incident Report

Issue:

Theseus came to visit. Spent the whole time complaining that Hades forced him to invite the Minotaur to his beach party. On leaving, Theseus became completely lost in the corridors of the Laboratory. Maybe designing the layout in the likeness of the Labyrinth was unwise. Charon was also lost for days when he came to pick up the new motorboat I designed for him.

Solution:
Provide a ball of string for each guest on entrance.

Location: Elysium Public Library
Project: Otto, the Automaton

Achievements:

Stupendous progress today. Positronic brain must have sparked to life. Otto went missing. Discovered in the library, reading books of its own accord. Seems to have a penchant for Twilight. Interesting.

Obstacles:
None. Automaton functioning at optimal capacity.

Location: Elysium Laboratory
Project: Antigravity Boots

Achievements:

Antigravity boots are progressing satisfactorily. Icarus levitated twenty feet and six inches into the air. Far superior to the wings of feather and wax I used to escape from Minos. Some adjustments needed on the vibratana device and boots will be fully operational.

Obstacles:
Icarus refused to come down. Forced to cut the remote power supply. May need a new test pilot. Do not want to repeat the moment that led to Icarus' death. He argues that he is already dead, so there is no danger—there's no sun to melt his wings in the Underworld. Did he learn nothing from his horrible plummet into the sea?

Notes:
Beginning to think my son is a lost cause.

Location: Elysium Laboratory
Project: Otto, the Automaton

Achievements:

Recently discovered Otto building an automaton in his own likeness. Complete consciousness has been achieved.

Obstacles:
Perdix admitted that he replaced the positronic brain I designed with his own model.

Notes: Perdix would make a good candidate for the next Antigravity boot test flight over the pit of Tartarus.

Location: Gates of the Underworld
Project: Sculpture of Cerberus

Achievements:

Sculpture commission from Lord Hades going well. The hellhound looks much better chiseled from marble than he does in real life.

Obstacles:
All three of Cerberus' heads tried to eat me at various points in the session, as did each serpent in his mane of snakes. Creature has terrible farts.

Notes:
If I didn't know it would get me thrown into Tartarus, I'd invent a Cerberus slaying device. Can't imagine what Hades sees in that beast.

Location: Tartarus
Incident Report

Issue:

Perdix tumbled into the black pit of Tartarus during a test flight of the antigravity boots. Mysterious malfunction in the vibratana device.

Solution:
Lord Hades says he'll send Hermes down to Tartarus to bring Perdix back again. I don't see what the rush is.

Notes:
Icarus was angry at being replaced by his cousin for this test flight, but now he seems relieved. Maybe he'll be less reckless in the future.
