Aksenty Ivanovich Poprishchin

Poprishchin might be the hero of the story, but he's such an unlikable character that it would be better to call him an antihero. He is ugly, mean, lazy, sexually frustrated, of a low rank, penniless, uncultured, and on top of it all, he fails in his mission to get the girl. We can't blame him for his madness, but his madness unfortunately seals the deal on his antihero status.
