As far as war celebrities go, Wilfred Owen's rather high on the list. Check out his info on the BBC's history site.

Pat Barker's multiple Booker Award-winning novels are collected in this three-volume set. They're fictional accounts of Craiglockhart War Hospital, where Wilfred Owen spent a good deal of time. They're also darn good books.
