Character Analysis
Sanglier, a knight, has the dubious honor of being the first person punished by Artegall's justice in Book 5. Unsatisfied with his own ladylove, he steals the love of another, beheads his own lady, and then lies and claims the love of another belongs to him. His treachery gives Artegall a chance to mimic the justice of the Biblical King Solomon in the Old Testament. Sanglier's treachery and selfishness represent a threat to public life because he refuses to abide by the law of the land, believing it doesn't apply to him. Artegall shows him that no one is above the law.
