Frankenstein is a classic and clearly timeless text that, thanks to its name recognition, has instant appeal with students ... until they start reading it. Okay, maybe that's a bit harsh, but the first challenge you'll face in teaching Frankenstein is overcoming the pop-culture image of the monster who, after all, doesn't even go by the titular name.

Your students will have a lot of preconceived notions about this one, and they may be expecting  something akin to a modern day horror-fiction page-turner. But Mary Shelley is not Stephen King, and it will be your task to get your students to work past the initial disappointment some of them will experience when they realize that.
