good times Questions

Bring on the tough stuff - there’s not just one right answer.

  1. How would you describe the speaker's voice throughout the poem? Does she sound any different by the very end?
  2. What's with the "improper" grammar? Why doesn't the speaker just say, "these are good times"?
  3. Does the second stanza look any different compared to the first? What do you notice that's different about the setting?
  4. Why does the speaker keep repeating the refrain, "good times"? Why not vary things up a bit?
  5. What's the effect of describing mom's home cooked bread? What does that kind of imagery contribute to the poem's mood?
