Apart from his name being in the movie's title, you can tell Will Hunting is our main man because the central conflict of this movie centers on his inner struggles. More specifically, he needs to find a way to work through his memories of childhood abuse in order to live a healthy emotional life.

And on top of all that, he's also insanely intelligent and he has a lot of people around him who worry about him squandering his gifts. But in the end, this movie is about Will learning to make choices that are right for Will, and after many hours of intense therapy with Sean Maguire, it looks like he might be on the way to making these choices.
