The Church and Prejudice: Section 3: Part 3 (Sentences 30-43) Summary

Prejudice Is Bad, But Slavery Is Worse

  • So prejudice isn't great, says Douglass, but it's nowhere near as bad as slavery.
  • And Southern churches loooove to defend slavery using the Bible and saying God obviously planned for things to be this way. Hard to argue with people who say it's not their idea, it's God's.
  • Douglass wraps up with another example.
  • He talks about his old master, who was a big-wig in the church and prayed all the time, quoting scripture while he whipped Douglass' cousin bloody.
  • So, super holy dude, obviously. #sarcasmfont
