Character Role Analysis

Dicey and James

Dicey is in charge of her younger siblings, and this means she often needs to make quick decisions and act in their best interest. James, on the other hand, isn't much of a doer—he's a thinker. He prefers to spend lots of time pondering complex issues, while Dicey has to sort things out quickly in order to keep her family safe. They may be different, but both of them bring something important to the family and help the kids find a new home in one piece.

Eunice & Abigail

Eunice and Abigail are just about as different as can be. Eunice's life is pious and routine and she has a tough time thinking for herself, while Abigail, on the other hand, is independent and opinionated, and doesn't care what people think. Ironically, Eunice doesn't love the children, but will offer them a home, while Abigail cares for them, but can't let them stay. While Dicey doesn't think that Eunice is a bad person, she does realize that her grandmother's home is a much better fit for their family. Better luck next time, Eunice.
