Character Role Analysis

Elsa Schneider

If you guessed that Elsa isn't your average romantic interest because of that whole aligned-with-the-Nazis thing, then you'd be right. She's greedy, disloyal, and duplicitous, but she's still Indiana's leading lady. He catches legitimate feelings for her and is thoroughly bummed when she turns out to be more captivated by the Holy Grail than she is by him. That's why he tries to save her life at the end of the film. She is sincerely interested in Indiana—his opinion of her clearly matters, at any rate—and that's what makes her such a nontraditional love interest.
