The Abbot of the Lung-cho Lamassery

Character Analysis

We never actually meet this character in person in the novel, but our lama, who was once also the Abbot of Suchzen Lamassery, mentions his fellow Abbot of the Lung-cho Lamassery as a man of great wisdom. The Kulu woman also knows this abbot, and she and the lama talk about his wisdom together. The fact that she knows him demonstrates the seriousness of her religious commitment to the lama—even though he continues to disapprove of her obsessive focus on religious charms for her grandsons.
