Character Role Analysis

Rufus-Tom Weylin

Rufus and his father are both white slave owners, and this fact definitely helps put both of them in the bad guy category. That said, there are several points in this book where Butler shows sympathy for both of them. But in the end she has Dana kill Rufus. Rufus has had many opportunities to grow as a person, but he ultimately turns into a racist and a rapist despite Dana's efforts to teach him better morals. This book just ain't gonna let Rufus off the hook, so in the end the dude's gotta die.
