Sample of Related History & Literature on Shmoop

  1. At the Time of the Writing…
In early 1941, Saint-Exupéry went to America to encourage the country to fight against Germany during WWII. He ended up staying for two years and wrote The Little Prince during that time. (Source.) An author's atmosphere affects his or her writing, so obviously WWII is significant to The Little Prince. This makes a good segue from fiction to fact, from story to author to the world around him, and Shmoop has a guide on the war to help you out.

  2. Her Diary
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl gives a first person account of life during WWII, and it was written at the same time as The Little Prince. Shmoop's got the story covered, and it'd be easy to relate one to the other. Anne Frank puts a face on the war and makes the part about the baobabs in The Little Prince (and why Saint-Exupéry went to America) easier to understand.
