Lysistrata Trivia

Brain Snacks: Tasty Tidbits of Knowledge

In 2003, during the lead-up to the Iraq War, two New York-based actresses named Kathryn Blume and Sharron Bower created The Lysistrata Project. This project involved readings and productions of Aristophanes' play (1029, in fact) across the country in protest against the war. No news on whether it involved an actual sex strike, though. In 2006, in Pereira, Colombia, the wives and girlfriends of the city's gangsters went on a sex strike to convince their men to give up violence. We wonder if anyone of them had to rush home to "shuck flax"? (Source.)

Another sex strike was organized by women in Kenya in 2009, to protest political corruption. Wow. No "lioness on the cheesegrater" for them. (Source.)
