Neither Out Far Nor in Deep Life, Consciousness, and Existence Quotes

How we cite our quotes: (Line)

Quote #1

The people along the sand
All turn and look one way. (1-2)

Being human is all about being unique. But if we're all looking "one way" and looking the same, we start to appear less than human. We look more like these sand zombies who seem as if they're forgetting what it means to be alive.

Quote #2

They turn their back on the land.
They look at the sea all day. (3-4)

We live our lives on land and yet it looks as if these folks are forgetting all about what's right beneath their feet. They're too mesmerized by that mysterious sea and all the things they can't really understand. So life, it seems, is not so much about living for these people. It's about thinking about living. How very meta.

Quote #3

They cannot look out far.
They cannot look in deep. (13-14)

So what's the point to all this staring at the sea if they can't look out far and they can't look in deep? It seems there's really no point, if we're being honest. Maybe these folks are really just wasting their lives on land. But that's kind of a common habit for us all, wasting time thinking about things that don't really matter or we can't understand, right? So maybe it's just human nature, and we should cut this group some slack.
