Character Role Analysis

Morgan le Fay, King Lot, Mordred

There's not really a single major baddie acting as antagonist until we get to the end of Book 3, and Mordred gets geared up. In Book 1, Morgan le Fay fulfills this role, although it's in a rather lighthearted, adventure-esque way. In Books 2 and 3, there's King Lot and a succession of random bloody barons that Arthur and his knights have to whip into shape.

Finally, the entire plot hinges on the showdown between Arthur and Mordred. Arthur's son and nephew, Mordred is the embodiment of fate and sin coming home to roost. He can't forgive Arthur for trying to kill him (wanting to cover up his accidental incest with Morgause).

But, really: do we honestly believe that if Arthur had not put all the babies onto the boat and floated them out to sea that Mordred would have a tight relationship with Pops? It's doubtful.
