  1. Because of Winn-Dixie
This story is also told in the first person voice (but real first person, not first animal like Ivan) and features an animal, Winn-Dixie, who helps tell a story of life and loss. It makes for a great companion piece to Ivan because it's similar enough but still wildly different.

  2. Another Tale of Animals and Survival
Island of the Blue Dolphins has a human protagonist living on an island and fighting for survival. It's not an exact parallel, but both stories feature relationships between people and animals, limited "domains," and main characters living without others of their species.
