Character Analysis
Dick Jarvits is a teenage boy of about fourteen or fifteen who lives in Phoenix, Arizona. His older brother is the dead warrant officer whose body Owen delivers. We'll be to the point with it: this kid is pretty disturbed. He hoards all kinds of weapons in his room, including machetes and grenades. He wears army fatigues all day and can't wait until he's old enough to go fight in Vietnam. He totally gives us the shivers, as John would say. Dick is most memorable for being the character who kills Owen with a grenade at the end of the novel. Unluckily for Dick, Major Rawls kills him pretty swiftly as a consequence of his violent actions.
