The Passing of the Year Questions

Bring on the tough stuff - there’s not just one right answer.

  1. Have you ever seen a face on the street (or maybe on the bus or train) and tried to guess what that person's story was? Do you think you think it's possible to be right? Can you know a person just from their appearance?
  2. Do you think joy and sadness always balance out in the world? Even if some people are happy and others are sad, are there equal amounts of both? Are there equal amounts in Service's poem?
  3. Do you feel like New Year's is kind of a letdown? Do you feel a little sad when it rolls around, or is it always good times?
  4. Is the speaker over-thinking things a little? We mean – it's just New Year's Eve, right? As far as we know, you're supposed to watch the ball drop, eat a little cake, and go to sleep, not ponder the fate of the world. Do you like the speaker's serious approach to the New Year, or do you prefer to be more celebratory?
