Character Role Analysis

Charlie Kahn

Charlie Kahn may not be a completely terrible person, and Vera may make peace with his death by the end of the book, but he's still the main person who causes her pain and suffering. When Charlie turns his back on Vera and takes Jenny Flick's side instead, our main girl feels entirely betrayed. And then when he hits her, she decides that she can't trust anyone ever again. Even though Charlie loves her, he's the one who causes her to feel alone and to turn to alcohol, so he's not exactly the best influence on her life.
