Just before these lines, the speaker mentions suggestions, facts, and tales, so our minds reel for a second trying to picture how anything like these things might be able to fit into a corner or show signs of use. Have you noticed how the speaker loves phrases that create ambiguity and even bring together contradictions, such as "this or that" (3), "a tale or two" (17), and the one we see here, "might prove useful and yet never proves?"
