Jacob Todd Timeline and Summary

  • Jacob is lost and alone in Amsterdam, when he meets a hottie named Ton who he confuses for a girl. (Or does he?) The two chat and flirt before Ton runs off and Jacob realizes his mistake.
  • When Jacob is pickpocketed, he's more frustrated than ever and quickly slips into a mouse mood; he's got no money or way to get back home.
  • Just then, Jacob meets Alma, who buys him a coffee and train ticket back home. He bonds with Alma right away and even shares his love of Anne Frank with the old lady.
  • Once he makes it back to Daan's pad (where he's staying), Jacob's embarrassed to relive the whole story—and it gets worse when Jacob learns that neither Daan nor Tessel knew he was coming until a couple days ago. It turns out Geertrui (Daan's grandma) invited Jacob without asking anyone, and she's in a nursing home now, planning her assisted death in a week or so.
  • Jacob thinks he should just beat it. He hates Amsterdam and no one wants him there, but then Daan tells him to stick around because Geertrui has a secret to tell him. Huh?
  • Daan takes Jacob to the museum to see Rembrandt's paintings. For the first time since arriving in Amsterdam, Jacob feels at home and like he's bonding with Daan. Finally.
  • Over the next couple days, Jacob meets up with Ton, who he now knows is a dude. They still flirt, which confuses Jacob since Ton is gay, but he's not sure that he is.
  • Then he meets Geertrui in the nursing home, and she asks him questions about his family. She knew Jacob's grandpa (also named Jacob) in WWII and helped him during it; Jacob's not really sure what he's doing there, but he's happy to talk to her.
  • Tessel takes Jacob to the remembrance service at Oosterbeek cemetery where Jacob's grandpa is buried. There, he meets Hille, a seventeen-year-old who has laid flowers on his grandpa's grave in the past.
  • The youngsters go get pancakes and swap stories—and foreign words—with each other. They quickly feel like they've always known each other, and Jacob is very attracted to Hille.
  • Geertrui asks to see Jacob again, so Daan takes him up to the nursing home. There, Geertrui gives Jacob a gift, which he has to promise not to open until he gets home.
  • At home, Jacob opens the gift, a memoir from Geertrui about her time with Jacob's grandpa—in it, Jacob learns that his grandpa and Geertrui were in love, and that they had a baby, a.k.a. Tessel.
  • Jacob meets up with Ton again, and this time he's less nervous and more willing to let himself flirt and kiss the guy. He's not sure what it means, but he likes Ton.
  • He also catches up with Alma. They share a coffee and again talk about Anne Frank. This time, Jacob tells her of his visit to Anne's house. Then Jacob shares the story of Geertrui's memoir with Alma, since he's not sure if he should tell his own grandma Sarah about it—Alma thinks Sarah might already know.
  • Jacob meets up with Hille, and they promise to catch up again sometime. He's on his way to the airport, but he'll definitely come back to Amsterdam.
