Character Role Analysis

White and Holdaway

It seems clear that Orange is the one being guided or mentored, and a couple characters fill that role. On the one hand we have Holdaway. He seems to be a superior of Orange's in the police force and works to help him land the gig with Joe. He gives him the commode story and tells him how to practice it, what he needs to know, and how he needs to play the part.

Then there's White, who acts almost like a father to Orange. He gives Orange some tips when they're sitting in the car, talking about who does what and the proper way to deal with unruly employees. Then when the heist goes haywire, White's there to guide the shocked Orange away from the dead Brown and the dead cops. When Orange is shot, White tries to comfort him. He tells him he's going to be okay and that he's a tough guy (he even makes Orange say it as if he were a child). He takes care of Orange until the very end.
