How we cite our quotes: (Chapter.Paragraph)

Quote #1

If [Mom] rented the studio in town, I'd probably never see either of my parents again. (6.14)

Grace's parents are scatterbrained at best, distant and neglectful at worst.

Quote #2

“My mom did this one. Dad did the other one.” (14.49)

Sam's explanation of the scars on his wrists is tragic. It also makes Grace's family seem like saints by comparison.

Quote #3

I couldn't believe [Grace's parents] wouldn't glance into Grace's room to make sure she was still alive, especially considering they hadn't seen her when they came home in the dead of night. (16.4)

This is interesting. Sam, the kid whose parents tried to murder him, is judging Grace's parents. Why? Do you think he parents were protective of him before he transformed? Or did Beck, who basically raised him, watch over him in this way?

Quote #4

“Beck's like a father to me.” It sounded weird to say it like that, even if it was true. (21.15)

We're not sure why it sounds weird for Sam to say this, because it's exactly true. Beck has practically raised Sam for eleven years, so of course he's like a father.

Quote #5

I was wondering what Dad would do if he knew about Sam. (23.35)

When Grace finds out that her Dad was one of the hunters in the woods, the revelation plants a seed of distrust in her. She's already not close to her parents, but this little crack in their trust drives her further away from them.

Quote #6

“It's about who you are. It's about you being one of us.” (24.47)

Seeing how Sam doesn't really feel comfortable being a wolf, it's a little ironic that he wants Grace to be one so bad. But it would make things lonely for him. The best part of being a wolf, for Sam, is the human connection that feels like family.

Quote #7

Grace and her parents had no problem talking about unimportant things [...] but I'd never once heard them talk about anything meaningful. (27.10)

Grace and her parents are experts at dodging around any sort of “important” issue. Do you think they tackle any sort of issue together, as a family, during the course of this book?

Quote #8

Ever since Beck had taken me under his wing, I'd been surrounded by family. [...] I'd taken it for granted, but now I felt spoiled. (27.11)

After witnessing some of the, shall we say “subpar,” families in the book—Grace's, Isabel's—Sam realizes just how good he had it growing up. Sure, he turned into a wolf for about five months out of the year, but the seven months of love and support beat the basically zero months Grace and Isabel get.

Quote #9

“I never knew anybody's parents were any different until I started school. Until I started reading.” (34.9)

Grace makes a good point here. Her family is the only one she knows, and she does love them in her own way. We wonder if Sam pointing out their flaws will do any good, or just make her resent her parents (or even Sam) more.

Quote #10

“He's my brother.” (41.45)

Isabel gives the simplest reason for saving Jack: he's her brother. He may be a jerk, he may have eaten her dog, but he's still her brother. That's family.

Quote #11

Sam had inherited so many of his mannerisms and movements from Beck. (58.1)

Sam's “father,” Beck, may not be related to him genetically, but it doesn't mean that he's unable to pass traits down to him.
