Love Quotes in Shiver

How we cite our quotes: (Chapter.Paragraph)

Quote #1

“If you finished making dinner,” she said, “I'll love you forever.” (5.20)

This would be cute if it were Grace talking to Sam, but it's Grace's mom talking to her. Shouldn't she already love her forever? Isn't that part of the mother-daughter contract? Their relationship is more like one between friends than between mother and daughter.

Quote #2

It had taken six years for him to let me touch him. Hold him. And now he'd guarded me, just like he'd always guarded me. (6.1)

Even though Grace is human and Sam is (mostly) a wolf, they still love each other. It's the most powerful inter-species love story since King Kong.

Quote #3

Did [Olivia] want me to pretend to like the other photos better than the one of my wolf? (8.73)

Grace's love for the wolf borders on obsession, but love often does. See: Romeo and Juliet and The Great Gatsby… or pretty much any other story about love.

Quote #4

Whatever [Sam] was, he was here now, and I wasn't about to lose him. (12.53)

Grace hasn't really experienced any sort of intense love during her life, so she feels like this is her one and only shot at it. She wants to hang onto Sam at any cost, no matter the danger to either of them.

Quote #5

My wolf was a cute guy and he was holding my hand. I could die happy. (14.66)

Going back to our Charlotte's Web analogy, if Wilbur had become human and he and Fern were older, would Fern have dated him? Would she have slept with him? How are their relationships different, and why is Grace so attached to something that isn't even her species?

Quote #6

What if [Grace] was in love with some other wolf and she only thought it was me? How would I ever know? (21.52)

Would it matter if Grace was in love with a different wolf in the past if she's in love with Sam, as a human, in the present?

Quote #7

“[Shelby] thinks she's in love with me. She wants to be in love with me.” (26.45)

Sam uses the word “thinks” here. Who is he to judge how Shelby feels about him? Might you also be able to say “Grace thinks she's in love with Sam”?

Quote #8

“Which one do you like?” [...] I tilted my head toward the blue one. “No contest.” (35.5, 35.7)

Grace's mother gives Sam a choice between “love” and “lust.” No, this isn't a scene out of The Graduate or “Stacy's Mom.” Maybe it is some sort of teen purity test, but what really matters is that Sam chooses love.

Quote #9

“It's just so fast. I want you to” – I stopped short of saying love me, because it seemed so presumptive. (37.34)

Sam's need for love, like Grace's borders on neediness. How do you think Grace have reacted if he did complete this sentence?

Quote #10

“Don't you two ever change. The world needs more love at first sight.” (43.113)

The candy shop girl says this to Grace and Sam on their date. Do you agree with her? Why do you think Grace and Sam inspire her to say this? Would she have said if two other people came into the candy shop, like Kim Jong-un and Dennis Rodman?
