Gary Lambert Timeline & Summary

  • Gary lives in Philadelphia with his wife Caroline. They have three kids: Aaron, Caleb, and Jonah.
  • When we first meet Gary, he's depressed but he doesn't know why. He's paranoid about Caroline and thinks she's turning the kids against him.
  • One day, Enid calls the house while Caroline and the kids play outside. She begs Gary to come to St. Jude for Christmas, and although Gary wants to, Caroline won't budge.
  • Enid also tells him that one of Alfred's patents was purchased by the Axon Corporation. Gary thinks that there's some money to be made…
  • Meanwhile, Gary and Caroline are in an all-out war over the possibility of Christmas in St. Jude. She sits with the kids and watches television all night, while he tosses back drink after drink.
  • Gary does some research into the Axon Corporation and gets the feeling that he could make a lot of money by buying stocks in the company.
  • He goes to a seminar hosted by Axon with his sister Denise, where they talk about a drug called Correcktall, which has the potential to revitalize a struggling brain.
  • Although Gary is there to make money, Denise realizes that the drug could help Alfred's mental problems.
  • Denise convinces the CEO of Axon to let Alfred into an upcoming Correcktall trial. The CEO agrees, but says that Alfred must be cleared of dementia before participating in the study.
  • Gary has trouble buying stocks from her, which only makes him want them more.
  • Finally, he gives in to Caroline and tells her that she and the kids don't have to come to St. Jude for Christmas. They reconcile and Gary realizes that he can use Caroline's family money to invest in Axon.
  • Gary assumes that his son Jonah will come. When Christmastime comes around, however, Caroline bribes Jonah into staying in Philadelphia.
  • Gary arrives in St. Jude a few days before Christmas and is annoyed from the start. Alfred is crazier than ever, Enid is asking him to do tons of work around the house, and all he really wants to do is play with model trains.
  • One night, as he cares for a hallucinating Alfred, he feels himself having a psychotic episode.
  • Enid keeps on saying that Chip will make it back from Lithuania in time for Christmas, but Gary doesn't believe her; he's proven wrong when Chip arrives on Christmas morning.
  • Gary, however, is fed up. He yells at everyone and tells them that Alfred is a hopeless cause. Only Chip realizes the truth behind this outburst: Gary is terrified.
  • In the end, Gary ends up losing a bunch of money on his Axon stocks.
