Character Role Analysis

Dorothea/Caroline

The two main adult figures in April's life are Dorothea, her mother, and Caroline, her grandmother. These two women could not be more different. Whereas Dorothea is glamorous and flighty, Caroline is plain and responsible. At first, April resents Caroline for being "boring," but by the end, she realizes that this kind of dependability and love is exactly what she needs from a guardian—and that's why she decides to stay with Caroline. Good decision, kid.
