William James Henry Timeline and Summary

  • Will Henry's parents die in a tragic fire.
  • He is adopted by Dr. Warthrop to be his assistant/apprentice.
  • Will Henry helps the doc perform necropsy and a grotesque abortion on Anthropophagus.
  • He accompanies the doc and Erasmus Gray back to the cemetery to return the girl's corpse and do some investigating about the Anthropophagi; he ends up watching Erasmus get eaten and running for his life from a larger pack of beasts than they expected.
  • Will Henry reads a depressing letter containing insight into Dr. Warthrop's relationship with his father (or lack thereof).
  • Dr. Warthrop and Will Henry go to Motley Hill Sanatorium to talk to Captain Varner about how the Anthropophagus got to New Jerusalem. They expose his inhumane treatment in the hands of Dr. Starr and help ease Capt. Varner to his death.
  • While visiting the market to get food for the house, Will Henry does some investigating about mysterious visitors Dr. Warthrop's father hosted during the approximate time of the Anthropophagi's arrival. All he gets for a reward is some gossip and a tongue-lashing from Dr. Warthrop.
  • Dr. Warthrop and Will Henry go to witness the scene of the crime after Anthropophagi utterly destroy the Stinnet family. Will Henry bonds with Malachi, the sole survivor, over their loss and self-preservation skills.
  • Will Henry prevents Malachi from killing Dr. Warthrop.
  • He assists the group of men who are assembled to destroy the Anthropophagi, and ends up killing one while defending the human bait.
  • Even though he wasn't supposed to end up underground, Will Henry is summoned into the creatures' lair because he's the only one small enough to survey a partially collapsed tunnel.
  • He ends up getting lost, killing a sick Anthropophagus baby, being used as bait by Kearns to draw out the matriarch, and then killing another juvenile beast. He witnesses Malachi's death at the hands of the matriarch, and then ends up killing her as well.
  • Will Henry, the doc, and Dr. Kearns go back to Motley Hill to interrogate Dr. Starr again. They get the answers they sought and then Kearns kills Starr right in front of them.
  • We learn that Will Henry is host to the same parasite that killed his father, but in his case they are in symbiosis, which will most likely grant him a very long life.
