The Mysterious Benedict Society Chapter 34 Summary

Sticky's Discovery

  • The kids send Mr. B the message: "M captured. Must face Whisperer tomorrow. Please advise" (34.1), and Mr. B writes back: "Laughter is the best medicine" (34.11). They're not sure what that means and decide that the best thing they can do is try to get some rest.
  • S.Q. wakes the boys at the crack of dawn for their session with the Whisperer. With all the other Messengers ill, Mr. Curtain needs to get their sessions in right away.
  • Reynie takes a moment to scribble something on his hand and then they're out the door.
  • When they're left alone for a moment, Reynie tells Sticky he has a plan, but Sticky has to go first in the Whisperer, and he has to resist it for as long as he can.
  • Sticky isn't too keen on this idea—in fact, he's downright terrified—but when the time comes, Sticky realizes that Reynie was right: when Sticky's friends really need him, he can step up.
  • He digs deep, finds his courage, and asks Mr. Curtain if he can go first this time.
  • Once Sticky is in the machine, Reynie goes to the window and presses his palm to the glass. Rhonda, Number Two, and Mr. B are supposed to be monitoring their movements from afar using telescopes, and if they are, they'll see the message that Reynie scrawled on his hand before leaving his room that morning: "We need K&C here! Now!" (34.105).
