Cal

We've been really beating up on Cal, and for good reason: he's just a nasty, snobby, unprincipled guy. At best, he treats others as servants and valued property, and at worst, like grimy rodents who aren't worthy of his respect or even attention. He does not make Rose happy, but she's forcing herself to go along with the engagement (at least initially) to help her family out.

Since Rose is basically his property as his fiancée, Cal monitors her behavior closely—and when she forms a friendship (and then more) with Jack, he does his very best to get in the way. Sounds like antagonist material to us.
