Character Role Analysis

Lee

Standing in Austin's way, and pushing him along at the same time, is big brother Lee. This guy just puts his stamp on the events of the play from the top. Austin might have more success as far as society sees it, but Lee still dominates the relationship. He is the older brother, and for him, there is no question as to who has authority in this situation.

The actions Lee takes lead to Austin's descent. The catch, though, is that Austin seems to have been aching to make that descent. In the end, it is Lee's refusal to let Austin take the final step in his transformation (leaving society behind to go to the desert) that sparks the final showdown between protagonist and antagonist.
