Counselor

You're working with kids who struggle to pick the right ice cream flavor at Baskin Robbins. How on earth are you supposed to guide them in making the arguably bigger life decisions of college and careers?

Here are a few places to start.

1. Application Station

Application station is your students' one-stop-shop for college applications. Just have them fill in some information about GPA, test scores, extracurriculars, and interests, and we will spit out a list of colleges for them to consider. They can click through each college to read more about it from an authentic angle.

Which brings us to...

2. College Profiles

Our college profiles give students an honest glimpse into life at their colleges of interest. This isn't your grandma's Princeton Review: each profile was written by students and alumni of that college, giving you insider access to the school's perks and quirks...and Harry Potter house.

3. College Essay Labs

Once they've narrowed down their wish list, students can head over to our College Application Essay Lab and College Scholarship Essay Lab. Each one will walk them step-by-step through the essay-writing process—with tips, examples, and videos to help—until they have a shiny (and unique) essay to show for it.

4. College 101

Think of Shmoop as a cool older sibling eager to share all our know-how on college life. Our College 101 articles cover everything from the earning potential of different degrees, to financial aid myths, to creative things to wear under your graduation robes. We've got hundreds and hundreds of articles for your students' browsing pleasure.

5. Guide to Financial Aid

For students who don't happen to live in the shade of a money tree, Shmoop's Financial Aid section lays out myriad ways to get moolah for school (schoolah?). Want proof that we know what we're talking about? A college student recently reached out to us and said, "with this tool I was able to earn a near-full-ride to Liberty University. I am very grateful for this website!" How 'bout them apples?

With articles on types of financial aid, tips for financing college, and a guide to applying for financial aid, your students are bound to find ways to fund their educational dreams.

6. Career Test

Some students can't imagine a career beyond their summer job in retail. Unfortunately, that career path won't bring them closer to their dreams of owning a red Ferrari.

Our career tests evaluate students' interests and skills and then serve up a smorgasbord of careers for them to read more about.

7. Career Guides

Tobias has just informed you that he wants to be a limnologist. You nod cheerfully, inwardly panicking as you try to figure out what he's talking about.

Don't worry: we have hundreds of juicy Career Guides to give both of you the scoop on daily responsibilities, salary, hazards, qualifications, and potential for fame and glory. And the careers range from accountant to zoologist.

Browse careers by field, salary, or alphabetical order—whichever floats your boat.

8. Planning for the Future

Rose colored glasses may have been a groovy '70s fashion trend, but they aren't useful when it comes to planning for the future. Shmoop's future-planning articles will be your students' tough-love life coach. We'll talk them through the pros and cons of various career choices, lead them to scholarships, and help them figure out just how much money they'd need to earn to take those yearly European vacations. (Also, we want an invite.)

9. Online Courses

So your star student wants to be an art historian...but your school doesn't offer any art history courses? We've gotcha covered. Send her to our Introduction to Art History Course, where she can explore the field on her own and make sure she's into it after 18 weeks (let alone 40 years).
