James Thurber was born on this day in 1894. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty author engaged in one of the more famous debates over the serial comma. (We know, we know. It's a hot topic.) Thurber thought writing "red, white, and blue" made it look like the flag was rained on and crumpled. Personally, we admire Thurber's patriotism, but Shmoop remains Team Serial Comma all the way.
