Virologist Jonas Salk announced the polio vaccine on this day in 1953, although it was actually his rival Albert Sabin's vaccine that ended up being more widely used. Never heard of Albert Sabin? Maybe you've heard of Pablo Picasso. Salk married Françoise Gilot, the painter's muse and mother of two of his children, in 1969. What we're saying is, if you thought Salk was just a bespectacled medical research nerd, think again. He got the credit, and he got the girl.
